Before seeing Dr. Kwan any type of food could make me sick with no warning. There was no rhyme or reason and no pattern so I couldn’t even avoid what would bother me. Since I never knew what would make me sick I avoided going out to restaurants with friends and never tried new things. With the help of Dr. Kwan’s homeopathy, I no longer fear food. Dr. Kwan’s detailed intakes of my symptoms lead her to prescribe the correct remedy. I am happy to say that now I can eat whatever I want and no longer fear the side effects of eating. Thank you Dr. Kwan; I will forever be grateful to you.

What role can a naturoopathic physician play in my healthcare?

Naturopathic physicians can be either:

  • Your primary medical care (e.g., your family doctor).
  • A complement to conventional medical treatment (e.g., your expert in natural medicine).

WHY SHOULD I SEE A PRACTITIONER WITH SPECIAL TRAINING IN HOMEOPATHY?

Proper homeopathic prescribing can require years of training, and Dr. Kwan has dedicated herself to the study of homeopathy, continuing to train with renowned homeopathic practitioners.

The process requires a detailed method of case taking, analysis and knowledge of thousands of homeopathic medicines. The homeopathic practitioner must carefully select the medicine based on the individual’s unique symptoms. Particularly for longstanding chronic conditions, appropriate dosing, follow-up and management of treatment are crucial. This can make the real difference whether homeopathic treatment is successful.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING THE INITIAL VISITS?

Initial visits are divided into two appointments which allow Dr. Kwan the time to get to know you and address every aspect of your health. Each visit is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours in length.

During the first visit, Dr. Kwan listens to your health concerns, gathers a complete and comprehensive medical history, performs relevant physical exams and may suggest additional laboratory tests. It is always helpful to gather any previous lab work and bring all medications and supplements to the first visit.

During the second visit, Dr. Kwan will discuss any lab findings and a treatment plan based on your individual needs. If homeopathy is the most appropriate treatment, Dr. Kwan will take your homeopathic case. This involves an in-depth examination of your specific health concerns and the circumstances or symptoms that make your illness unique to you. Information about you as a “whole person” will also be important. Dr. Kwan wants you to be committed to improving your health and will always take the time to answer any questions.

After considering all your specific symptoms, a homeopathic medicine alone, or in conjunction with other naturopathic modalities may be prescribed. Homeopathy can help in many conditions, however, some individuals will also benefit from other treatments, such as nutrition, lifestyle counseling, botanical medicine or spinal manipulation. Dr. Kwan practices using the least intervention for the greatest benefits, therefore, she will rarely suggest bags of supplements and will work with you to set attainable goals.

What about follow-up visits?

Follow-up visits are important to make sure your health is improving until you are all better. Despite all efforts, sometimes the first homeopathic medicine prescribed may not work for you, and we’ll need to re-evaluate our information and adjust our plan.

Typically, follow-up visits will take place around four weeks and last approximately 30 minutes.

Are the medicines expensive?

Homeopathic medicines are economical, not only because the medicines are inexpensive (approx. $10-20), but because homeopathy can be curative. Therefore, freeing you from potentially lifelong costly medicines.

How quickly will I begin to improve?

Since we are treating individuals, with individualized medicine, each person will react at a different rate and in different ways. Some individuals feel better right away. Others take a few weeks before they notice an improvement. Often patients report they just start to feel better overall, even though they may not notice significant improvement in symptoms initially. This is usually a good sign that their symptoms will begin to improve shortly.

Are there adverse effects?

Since homeopathy is very gentle medicine, adverse side effects are extremely rare. Some individuals may experience what homeopathic practitioners may call a ‘therapeutic aggravation’. This may appear as a short aggravation of your symptoms. In fact, although you may not feel that way at that moment, it is a good sign that you are on your way to healing.

As you undergo homeopathic treatment, you may also notice a return of some old symptoms that you had in the past. For example, you may have had eczema as a child, and your eczema returns. This is all part of the healing process and is yet another sign that you are returning to a healthier balance and state. Report the new symptoms at your next visit.

How do I take the medicine?

The homeopathic medicines come in the form of small pellets. It is best to dissolve the pellets under the tongue and in a clean mouth. For this reason, it is recommended that you avoid food and drink for 15 minutes before and after taking the medicine. The dose and frequency will depend on your individual circumstances.

It is best to avoid touching the medicine with your hands. The homeopathic medicines come in vials and the pellets can be easily dispensed into the lid then placed in the mouth. Only dispense what you need to take at the time.

Must I avoid anything during treatment?

It is best to avoid adding or deleting any new treatments or medicines, including supplements, once homeopathic treatment has begun. Keeping all other factors the same, will help to determine if the right homeopathic medicine has been chosen.

What about my other medications?

While beginning homeopathic treatment you may be asked to either keep your medication regimen the same or discontinue certain medications. It is beneficial to keep as many of the existing variables the same until we determine if the homeopathic medicine is working. When you are making progress, then if appropriate, we may begin to decrease other medications as you begin to improve.

In some instances, it is necessary for you to be on medications for the rest of your life. For example, homeopathic treatment is not a replacement for heart patients on blood thinners. However, homeopathic treatment can act as a great adjunct to medications, often helping the patient to lower the dosage of their prescription medications, improving their well-being or palliating some of the side effects of their medications.

Is there any research on homeopathy?

Yes, there is scientific research to support homeopathy works.

Do you take insurance?

Kwan Naturopathic does not take insurance. However, as a service to patients, our office will submit a reimbursement form to your insurance company. In our experience, some PPO insurance plans do reimburse for a percentage of the cost of naturopathic office visits.

Our office can in most cases, bill your insurance company for labs and imaging studies.
